Base 12 Number Redesign

Description

I was going to do homework this morning, but then I watched a video by numberphile on the topic of counting in base 12 rather than base 10 and got to thinking. It was a new concept to me, but what immediately struck me is that different people seem to use different symbols to replace "10" and "11," and that by keeping the traditional arabic numerals, this creates problems with "100" becoming "144" in base 12 counting. I gave some thought to simply redesigning the numbers to eliminate this problem. Immediately, I ran into the problems of having clear symbols, and using too many strokes in my first sketches. There's also the consideration of how it would look in "cursive" or in loose handwriting. The goal was to design something which would be easy to remember when written out, relate to the numbers being written, but also be clearly different from traditional arabic numbers. I kept the symbols used by numberphile in place of 10 and 11.
