This was my final project for the class, 2D design. We had to depict a Biblical scene by coloring paper with acrylic paint and cutting out shapes to create a design, ala Matisse. I chose the conversion of the apostle Paul on the road to Damascus, a tremendously dramatic scene from Scripture. I was told that the color blue represents redemption, so I surrounded him with blue and used a predominantly analogous color scheme (blues, violets, and reds). The outstretched yellow hand represents God. My teacher gave me an A for this final project and some moderately good comments. He appreciated how I used a horse as a symbol for Paul's past life. In Biblical times, a horse would represent authority, and Paul was a powerful Roman citizen. I chose dull red and blue colors for the horse and its mane and a dark black-green for Paul to represent his sinful condition. My prof. understood that, but he didn't think the dull colors fit well with the rest of the piece. He loved the relationship between Paul's raised hand, the horse, and God's hand. Also, he thought the colors created a deep, melancholy mood. He also thought I should have added some more fingers to God's hand.

I like this idea enough to come back and work on it. I plan to do a digital version using Adobe Illustrator. That way, I'll be able to experiment with color to my heart's content.
