I used black charcoal pencil for this portrait. My goal was to draw an intense, expressionistic representation of Moses striking the rock. Standing in front of a mirror, I used my own face as a reference, and posed with my bo staff!
The Bible tells the story of how, when Moses needed to provide the grumbling Israelites with water, God told Moses to speak to a rock, and He would bring forth water from the rock. Angry with the contentious people, Moses disobeyed God and struck the rock in a rage. Because of this rebellious act, Moses would never set foot in the promised land. "Meribah" means contention or quarreling, and the waters were named "Meribah" for that reason. (You can find the story in the book of Numbers, chapter 20.)
When I started brainstorming my composition, I studied how other artists had rendered the scene, and to my disappointment, few seemed to show Moses' emotion; Moses didn't appear to be striking the rock with energy. The primary goal of this piece was to represent Moses' anger and the strength of his blow.
I'm entering this piece into a contest for where the subject was "water."
EDIT I took another photo in bright sunlight and it turned out much better!
Very well-done, the sketchyness adds to the feel of the picture. I like his expression.
In the story, Moses had already struck it once because God told him to, right? God then asked him to speak to the rock. In my mind's eye, I always pictured Moses as more frustrated and ashamed then angry, because God was asking him to do something harder, and probably more embarrassing.
Yeah, Moses certainly looks pretty ticked off... and I don't blame him! Having to put up with a bunch of quarrelling Hebrews for nearly 40 years, I guess I'd lose it myself!
I like
